Although many scientists consider man-made global warming a hoax, new EU targets to tackle the “problem” are set to cost Irish people alone E1 billion per year.

The cost of electricity, fuel, transport, etc. are to be increased to meet the demands of the unelected Commission’s plan for climate control. Ireland is one of the countries which will be hardest hit by the measures.

Minister Brian Cowen is already talking about “a change of lifestyle by all citizens” to meet the EU demands. At the same time, there is growing concern that big industries will simply move to China or India.

Meanwhile, author and journalist Christopher Booker has criticised what he calls “the ever more bizarre scare over global warming.”

The UN’s climate agency, which has a vested interest in promoting panic about climate change, comes in for particular criticism.

It has, said the journalist, “hyped up the scare by claiming that world surface temperatures have been higher in 11 of the past 12 years than ever previously recorded.”

This, however, “carefully ignores the latest US satellite figures” which show that temperatures have been falling since 1998, and in 2007 they fell to the 1983 level.

Again, new figures for the US show that “the 1930s had four of the 10 warmest years of the past century, with the hottest year of all being 1934, not 1998, as was previously claimed.”

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, Booker noted that few people have yet grasped “the mind-blowing scale of all the ‘planet-saving’ measures” which the EU is seeking to enforce.

One EU directive, for example, lays down that by 2020 10% of transport fuel will be ‘biofuels’.

This, says the journalist, “would take up pretty well all the farmland we currently use to grow food (at a time when grain prices have doubled in six months and we already face a global food shortage).”

Another EU plan is the compulsory switch over to low-energy bulbs, likely to cost a fortune as more than half the domestic light fittings in the UK, for example, cannot take them.

Booker is co-author of the recently published book, Scared to Death: From BSE To Global Warming.
